USPS applies dimensional weight to Priority Mail packages larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). A large box with a light item inside can cost more than its actual weight suggests.
Since July 12, 2026, USPS rounds each side up to the next whole inch, multiplies length × width × height and divides by 139 (previously 166). If that result is higher than the actual weight, it becomes the billable weight.
For example, a 12 × 12 × 14 inch box has 2,016 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that rounds up to a dimensional weight of 15 lb. If the packed box weighs 4 lb, you pay the 15 lb rate.
Applies to weight-based and Flat Rate packages.
Measure the longest side, then add the distance around the thickest part.
Cubic pricing covers small packages only.
Flat Rate prices require official USPS Flat Rate packaging.
Order Priority Mail boxes and envelopes from USPS at no cost.
Prohibited and restricted items follow USPS mailing standards.

With Shippo, USPS Priority Mail starts at $8.01 for a small package going to a nearby zone (September 2026). The price depends on the pricing option: Flat Rate charges one price per box, weight-based pricing goes by pound and zone, and Cubic uses box volume. Cubic pricing sets the Priority Mail rate by package volume and zone instead of weight. It covers packages up to 0.5 cubic feet and 20 lb, which makes it useful for small, heavy items. Shippo offers Cubic pricing for eligible packages.
