A box of pillows or packing foam can weigh very little and still take up a lot of truck space. USPS accounts for that with dimensional weight, which applies to Ground Advantage packages larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches).
Since July 12, 2026, USPS rounds each side up to the next whole inch, multiplies length × width × height and divides by 139 (previously 166). If that result is higher than the actual weight, it becomes the billable weight.
For example, a 14 × 14 × 14 inch box has 2,744 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that's a dimensional weight of 20 lb. If the packed box weighs 6 lb, you pay the 20 lb rate.
Heavier packages need a UPS or FedEx ground service.
Measure the longest side, then add the distance around the thickest part.
Packages over 22 or 30 inches in length add nonstandard fees.
Large-volume boxes carry an extra USPS charge.
Many restricted items can ship with correct marking and packaging.
Prohibited and restricted items follow USPS mailing standards.
